In the email, follow the “Click here to reset your password” link and submit a new password that meets the requirements.
Go to “Course Content” and click “Start Here.” Then watch the short but important video that explains how to successfully navigate and complete the OBTC. It will walk you through how to take chapter quizzes and how to take the final exam.
After you purchase the course, you will have 12 months to review the course and complete the test.
To have access to the OBTC content after your 12-month subscription expires, you must download and save and/or print each chapter while your subscription is active. The “Start Here” video in the beginning explains how to do this. NVLSP will not email customers pdf copies of the course material – it must be downloaded by the customer while logged in to the course.
To get the latest OBTC version, after your 12-month subscription expires, you will need to repurchase the course. NVLSP updates the Basic Training Course as new pertinent information becomes available.
CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION
You need a minimum passing score of 70% on the final exam. Please carefully review the FAQ section for the Final Exam, all chapters of the course, and all chapter quizzes before taking the final exam.
After receiving a passing score of the Final Exam, you will be automatically prompted to a page where you can download and save and/or print your certificate. We recommend you do this immediately, so you don’t forget. You can re-access your certificate while your 12-month subscription is active by clicking on the “Course Contents” tab, which will direct you to the page where you can download your certificate and save and/or print your certificate.
NVLSP does not store or have access to your certificate. Thus, we are unable to reissue certificates, so please remember to download and save your certificate.
FINAL EXAM
If you would like a Certificate of Completion, you need a passing score of 70% on the final exam. Please carefully review all chapters of the course and all chapter quizzes before taking the final exam.
If you do not need a Certificate of Completion, you do not need to pass the final exam.
No. Once you have purchased the OBTC, you can access the materials as many times as needed during the 12-month subscription period from the time of purchase.
The final examination is not timed and can be accessed any time within the 12-month period. However, we recommend that you complete the final exam in one sitting. We recommend that you set aside 60 to 90 minutes for the final exam.
You must scroll through each question in order, so we do not recommend skipping a question. For example, if you skip question 2 and continue to question 80, to go back to question 2, you must click back through question 79, question 78, question 77, and so on to reach question 2. If you do skip any questions, we recommend that you write down the number of each question you skipped so you do not forget to return to answer the question.
Yes. If you failed the final exam, you can retake the exam. While there is no limit to how many times you can retake the exam, please carefully review the course material before retaking the exam.

NVLSP’s OBTC is an excellent overview of VA benefits and provides the basic knowledge that veterans service officers need to have. It serves well as a starting point for new hires, a veteran or family member, or anyone wanting to learn more about veterans’ law.
The first step to become a veterans service officer is to reach out to the service department of a veterans service organization to see if they are hiring service officers or seeking volunteers to become service officers, and go from there. (NVLSP is not currently seeking additional service officers).
Generally, the service department of a veterans service organization must decide to accredit you as a representative of their organization. Each veterans service organization has their own requirements for accrediting someone as a veterans service officer. Several veterans service organizations use NVLSP’s course as the initial training for their new veterans service officers, and require those service officers to pass the test at the end of the course as a requirement for becoming accredited as a representative of the organization.
For further questions, please reach out to the service department of a veterans service organization to see if they are hiring service officers or seeking volunteers. Passing this course does not qualify you as an accredited representative of NVLSP.
